Etsy's AI policy for sellers, quoted and dated

By Shayne Webb, founder of PrintShark

Every rule on this page comes from Etsy's own policy pages, which we read on October 1, 2026, and links back to them so you can check. Where a popular claim about Etsy and AI has no Etsy source behind it, we say so instead of repeating it.

Short answer

Yes, Etsy allows AI-assisted designs. Its Creativity Standards list seller-prompted AI art under "Designed by a seller", as long as it is generated from your own original prompts and you disclose AI use in the listing description. AI prompt bundles are not allowed. If a production partner such as Printify prints the item, you must disclose that too.

Last verified: October 1, 2026, against Etsy's Creativity Standards (last updated June 10, 2025), the Seller Handbook article on AI (July 9, 2024) and Etsy's production partner help article.

Does Etsy allow AI art?

Yes. In July 2024 Etsy said it would "continue to allow" sellers to combine their own original prompts with AI tools to make the artwork they sell. The current Creativity Standards, last updated June 10, 2025, list seller-prompted AI art as a qualifying example of a Designed by a seller item. Disclosure is the condition.

The Standards call this category "Seller-prompted AI creations": items made with AI image generators (Etsy names Dall-E as an example) from a seller's original prompts. Notice how often the word original shows up. The prompt has to be yours, and the Designed by a seller category itself is defined as sellers' original designs. A design that copies another artist, a brand or a character is a problem whether a person or a model drew it.

The 2024 handbook article adds one more line worth knowing: AI depictions of nudity and sexual content have to follow Etsy's Prohibited Items Policy, the same as any other listing.

Do Etsy sellers have to disclose AI?

Yes. Etsy requires sellers to disclose when an item was created with the use of AI, and it says where: "within their listing description." The same requirement appears in both the Creativity Standards and the July 2024 Seller Handbook article. A shop-wide banner or a line on your About page is not what the rule describes.

Etsy does not prescribe exact wording. Plain and specific works. Here are two lines a print-on-demand seller could adapt (our examples, not Etsy's):

This design was created with the help of AI image tools, under my creative direction.
Designed by [your shop name] using AI-assisted artwork. Printed and shipped by our print-on-demand production partner.

Put it where a shopper will read it, such as a short "About this design" line near the top, not under the care instructions. The second example also mentions your production partner, but that line does not replace Etsy's production partner setup: add the partner on Etsy.com and update your shipping locations, as covered next.

What does "Designed by" mean on Etsy?

"Designed by a seller" is one of Etsy's four Creativity Standards categories. It covers your original designs when a third party produces or prints them, or when you sell them as digital downloads. A print-on-demand shop using Printify fits here, and Etsy lists seller-prompted AI art as a qualifying example.

The other three categories are Made by a seller, Handpicked by a seller and Sourced by a seller. Designed by a seller comes with its own obligation: the Standards require you to disclose that a production partner makes the item and to give accurate information about where it ships from.

Etsy's help article on production partners lists print-on-demand services as a partner type, naming Printify among its examples. Partners you add show to buyers in your shop's About section, and Etsy asks you to update each listing's shipping location so it reflects where the partner ships from. Etsy also notes that new production partners cannot be added in the Etsy Seller app; you add them on Etsy.com.

One gap worth knowing about. Etsy's wording is "based on a seller's original prompts." It does not say whether a prompt drafted by software you direct counts as yours, and we found no Etsy guidance on that point. The careful reading is that the responsibility stays with you: you set the shop's direction, you decide what goes live, and you disclose AI use.

Can you use AI mockups on Etsy?

The Etsy pages we verified do not set a separate rule for AI-generated mockups or listing photos. The disclosure rule covers items created with AI. Our practical advice: make sure every mockup shows the real design, at a believable size, on the real product, and say in the description that product images are digital mockups.

Mockups are normal in print-on-demand, since nothing exists to photograph until an order comes in. The risk with AI mockups is not the AI. It is inaccuracy: lettering that is spelled wrong on the mockup but right on the print file, a design shown twice the size it will print, or artwork placed on a surface the product does not have. Each of those shows the buyer something they will not receive.

If the design itself was AI-assisted, your description already carries an AI disclosure. Adding "product images are digitally generated mockups" costs one more line.

Can Etsy detect AI images?

Etsy has not published how, or whether, it detects AI-generated images. We have seen no Etsy statement describing a detection tool, and running PrintShark has given us no evidence either way. It does not change what you should do: the rule is to disclose, and Etsy can remove listings that break its policies.

Be wary of anyone who tells you Etsy's detection works a particular way, or that a certain editing trick gets past it. Neither claim has an Etsy source. The Creativity Standards do state that Etsy reserves the right to remove listings that do not follow its policies, so the practical position is simple: disclose, and there is nothing to detect.

Will Etsy ban AI art?

Nothing in Etsy's current policy pages says so. As of October 1, 2026, the Creativity Standards still list seller-prompted AI art as allowed with disclosure. Etsy's 2024 handbook article says it will keep monitoring and periodically reevaluate its policies, so the rule could change. Check the source pages, not social media rumors.

We plan to re-read these pages every month and update the "Last verified" date at the top when we do. If Etsy changes a rule, the change will show up in the timeline at the bottom of this page with a link.

What gets AI listings removed on Etsy?

Etsy's Creativity Standards say Etsy "reserves the right to remove listings that do not follow our policies." For AI-assisted items, the rules a listing can break are: no AI disclosure in the description, selling AI prompt bundles, using someone else's work, nudity outside the Prohibited Items Policy, or an undisclosed production partner or wrong ship-from location.

Each of those rules is in the table below with its source. Etsy's policy pages publish no figures on how many AI listings it removes, so treat removal statistics you see quoted elsewhere with caution.

What does Etsy allow and not allow with AI?

Every rule we could tie to an Etsy page, in one place. Anything marked "None found" means we looked and Etsy has not published a rule on it.

Not supported

Claims you will see elsewhere that Etsy's pages do not support

Search results for Etsy's AI policy are full of confident specifics. For each of these we either found no Etsy source or found Etsy saying the opposite, so we do not repeat them as fact:

  • A specific date in early 2026 when Etsy supposedly "began enforcing" its AI rules. No Etsy page we read names an enforcement start date.
  • Exact counts of AI listings removed, or warnings sent, in a given quarter. Etsy's policy pages publish no such figures.
  • That Etsy runs AI-detection software that removes listings automatically. Etsy has not published a detection method.
  • That AI designs cannot be listed as Designed by a seller. The Creativity Standards name seller-prompted AI art as a qualifying example.
  • That a note on your About page or in your tags covers the AI disclosure. The verified rule says the listing description.

If Etsy publishes any of these, we will add it to this page with a link.

What should you check before publishing an AI-assisted listing?

Run through this for every listing, whether you made it by hand or with a tool. If you are automating your shop, our step-by-step guide to automating a print-on-demand shop shows where a review step fits, and is Etsy automation allowed? covers the wider rules on tools, bots and the API.

First-hand

What we see running PrintShark

PrintShark is software that runs a print-on-demand shop on Etsy, from niche research to AI-assisted designs, mockups and listings, so these rules are part of our daily work. A few things we have learned:

  • Originality is a process, not a promise. Every design starts from its own written art brief for one niche and one product, and designs for the same trend in a run are told to look nothing like each other. That helps keep a shop from filling up with variations of one image.
  • AI text is the weak spot. Our design quality check scores spelling and legibility of any lettering alongside artifacts, print clarity, composition and appeal. Designs below 8 out of 10 are regenerated up to two more times and dropped if they still fail. When designs fail, it is usually down to garbled text, visual artifacts or weak commercial appeal.
  • Mockups need their own check. A separate pass/fail inspection looks for eight defect types, including garbled or wrong text (compared word for word when the design has known text), wrong scale and the design on the wrong surface. Mockups you add by hand are not checked automatically, so review those yourself.
  • Ship-from data can be wrong at the source. Printify's catalog lists a provider's registered address, which is not always where an order ships from. We found providers listed with US addresses that fulfill some products from overseas; the real origin appears in the Etsy shipping profile created at publish. PrintShark excludes those providers, but check your own shipping profiles.
  • The disclosure is yours to confirm. Etsy requires sellers to disclose AI use and their production partner. PrintShark is designed so you can meet those rules: by default new listings wait as drafts on your Dashboard until you publish them. Listing copy is generated automatically and is not editable inside PrintShark, so add your AI disclosure to the description on the product in Printify before you publish. If you use the publish queue instead, listings go live without your review, so add the disclosure before they are queued. PrintShark does not rewrite descriptions automatically after publish, but checking the disclosure on every live listing is still up to you.

Etsy AI policy FAQ

In the listing description of each item created with AI. That is the place both Etsy's Creativity Standards and its 2024 Seller Handbook article name. A note on your About page or in your tags is not what the rule describes.

Etsy's rule is about items created with AI, and the pages we verified do not mention listing photos. We found no Etsy answer for this case. A one-line note that product images are digital mockups is cheap and keeps the listing honest.

No. The Creativity Standards say AI prompt bundles do not qualify as Designed by a seller, and Etsy's 2024 Seller Handbook article says Etsy prohibits selling them.

The AI rule stays the same, but you have a second disclosure to make. Because Printify produces the item, Etsy requires you to disclose it as a production partner and to give accurate information about where the item ships from.
